Place and Identity
Place and Identity
“Your room should be a place where you feel totally at ease”, This work consists of a group of university students and their safe space at university. My influence came from the interests of how each individual student lives their life in a university accommodation. I have picked a number of students’ to model for me as I wanted to capture the students' identity in their accommodations through the use of cleanliness and decorations. Being at university I have come across people of different ages and students with their individual styles of which can definitely be seen in his work, by the way each student decorates their room and how well they keep it together. The inspiration for this work came from being so interested in the population around Portsmouth and since going to university the interest continued growing. Because he lived at home for the duration of university he began to grow an interest in the university accommodations and what each of the different accommodation buildings look like. After visiting a few different accommodation buildings I was surprised to see that each room has the same exact layout with similar features such as the beds, wardrobes and desks. Seeing that all of the rooms have that exact layout something sparked in my brain which led me to create this piece of work. Alongside the place I also wanted to include the people who have decorated and live in these rooms, the reason for that being is, I did not only want to show off the rooms he also wanted to show off each of the individuals.
